The N64 Cult Classic That Almost Passed Us By - Sin and Punishment

Sin and Punishment is a rail shooter video game co-developed by Treasure and Nintendo for the Nintendo 64, released in 2000.

It was one of the most popular Japan-exclusive Nintendo 64 games, perhaps second only to Animal Crossing. The graphics are often considered some of the best the system has to offer, partly due to it coming out so late in the N64’s lifespan.

Set in a near future of 2007, mutants bred to boost dwindling food stocks who have turned against their masters.

Players follow teenage protagonists Saki Amamiya and Airan Jo as they battle through waves of enemies, military forces, and monsters, uncovering a deeper conspiracy about the Ruffians’ origins and humanity’s role in the crisis.

The game received high acclaim from critics. Due to a lack of Western release, the game gained a large cult following among game importers until the game was localized via the Nintendo Virtual Console in 2007.

Nintendo and Treasure collaborated again for a sequel for the Wii released in 2009, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor.
